Developmental Disabilities Services

Developmental disabilities services (DDS) are the part of a division of the SocialServices Administration and Indiana Family and the Division of Aging, Disability andRehabilitation Services. DDS provides the services for those people with developmental disabilities so that they can become capable and self-sufficient. DDS strives for development and implementation of various public policies that promotes self-respect, individual worth and dignity of each individual so that one is considered as a contributing member of the community.

The primary goal of DDS is to provide long term funds for various employment or vocational support services, support services like transportation and rehabilitation services. These services help them in ensuring the essential information so that they can make the right decision about their options and get the maximum benefit from these services and becomes successful.

Eligibility

The disabled person must meet the following criteria to be eligible for receiving developmental disabilities services such as:-

  • Expected to continue indefinitely
  • Mental or physical disability
  • Have a disability which requires rehabilitative and intensive services which results into functional independence
  • Originated before age 22
  • Have substantial limitations in language, learning, mobility, self-care, economic self-sufficiency and self-direction

Eligibility is determined without regard to sex, race, age, national origin or color. There are not enough resources so that every disabled person can be served whether one is eligible or not.

DDS was created to help the disabled people with disabilities and their educators, families, members of private and state agencies and guardians so that they can better understand the terms and definitions.

Principles of Developmental Disabilities Services

Continuity and Coordination of Services

Certain services are provided to the disabled people in a flexible system which ensures people that they should remain in their own houses and communities.

Respect for Employees

DDS treats every employee equally including the disabled person as all the employees are considered as the division’s most valuable resource.

Nondiscrimination

This service does not discriminate the disabled people on the basis of national origin, gender, religion, color, disability and race in various admissions and access to treatment, services and employment.

Individual worth and Development

All disabled people are approved with respect and dignity by DDS and support the following – personal value and positive recognition by self and others, health and safety, integration, benefits of relationships with families and friends etc.

Services quality and performance accountability

DDS is accountable to the public so that all the people can make prudent and effective use of all the resources. This service conducts the regular evaluation, review and modifications of services and programs.

Community participation and partnership

Developmental disabilities services and supports promote the participation and partnership of service providers, local governments, parents, advocates, consumers, citizens etc.
